The objective of the GRAIL mission was to obtain an accurate map of the moon's gravity to determine the composition and structure of its interior. The first of the GRAIL probes entered lunar orbit on December 31, 2011, the second did the next day. The mission ended on December 17, 2012 when the probes crashed into the surface of the Moon.
